Paying To Wait; Video Games Want Their Share Of Sports Ad Dollars

Paying To Wait; Video Games Want Their Share Of Sports Ad Dollars

A new browser extension called Kickbacks is turning idle wait times into ad revenue. The tool works by serving advertisements while users wait for responses from Claude Code, a popular coding assistant. Instead of staring at a loading screen or a spinning cursor, users see targeted ads. The extension's creators argue that this "dead time" is valuable real estate, and they are betting that both users and advertisers will accept the trade-off. Early tests show that engagement rates are high, likely because users are already focused on their screens and waiting for results.

Meanwhile, the video game industry is making a bigger push into the advertising space. Electronic Arts, the publisher behind franchises like Madden NFL and FIFA, is launching its own ad platform. The goal is to sell dynamic, in-game ad placements directly to brands, bypassing traditional ad networks. EA plans to insert ads into sports games during natural pauses, like timeouts, halftime, or replays. The company believes these moments are similar to commercial breaks in live sports broadcasts, and it wants a slice of the billions spent on sports advertising each year.

Critics argue that players already pay full price for games and should not have to watch ads. But EA and other publishers see a future where ad-supported revenue becomes a major income stream, especially as game development costs rise. The shift mirrors what has already happened in streaming video and social media. If successful, this model could spread beyond sports titles into other genres, turning every loading screen, lobby wait, or respawn timer into a billboard.
