A new study from Japan has identified a connection between certain types of video games and an increased risk of hikikomori, the severe form of social isolation that affects a growing number of young people in the country. Researchers found that individuals who prefer cooperative, strategic, and narrative-driven games are more likely to develop the condition compared to those who play other genres.
The study analyzed the gaming habits of a sample group and tracked their social behaviors over time. The data suggests that games requiring deep collaboration or long hours of immersion in a story may encourage players to prioritize virtual worlds over real-world interactions. This is especially true for players who already show signs of social anxiety or a preference for solitary activities.
Experts caution that the study does not prove that these games cause hikikomori. Instead, the correlation may point to a cycle where individuals already prone to withdrawal are drawn to games that reinforce their isolation. The findings could help educators and mental health professionals identify at-risk players earlier and develop intervention strategies that do not simply demonize gaming but address the underlying social factors.
