Hand-drawn, retro video game maps

Hand-drawn, retro video game maps

A new project called Hand-Drawn Game Guides is turning classic video game levels into works of art. Created by illustrator Philip Summers, the series features detailed, hand-illustrated maps and guides for beloved retro titles like Legend of Zelda, Mega Man, and Contra.

Rather than relying on pixel-perfect screenshots or digital recreations, Summers draws each map from scratch using pen, ink, and watercolor. The result is a nostalgic blend of cartography and childhood memory. His maps highlight key locations, enemy spawn points, item placements, and hidden secrets, all rendered in a warm, old-fashioned style that mimics the look of vintage adventure guides or fantasy atlases.

Summers says the project began as a personal hobby. He wanted to capture the feeling of exploring Hyrule or navigating the alien-infested corridors of Contra without a walkthrough. Each map takes hours to complete, requiring careful study of the original game's layout and a steady hand to preserve the charm of the 8-bit and 16-bit eras.

The guides have found an audience among collectors and gamers who appreciate the tactile quality of hand-drawn work. In an age of digital strategy guides and YouTube tutorials, Summers' approach offers a slower, more artistic way to revisit classic games. The project continues to grow, with new maps added regularly for fans of the golden age of gaming.
