The "Marvel MaXimum Collection" bundles thirteen games into one package, and the quality swings wildly. Some are genuine classics that still hold up, while others feel like filler from the bargain bin. Here is the full ranking.
At the top sits "Marvel vs. Capcom 2." The chaotic three-on-three fights, the absurd roster, and the jazzy soundtrack make it timeless. Right behind it is "X-Men: Children of the Atom," the game that started the fighting craze. Its fast pace and screen-filling supers still feel fresh.
"Marvel Super Heroes" lands in the middle. It introduced the Infinity Gems mechanic, which added strategy, but the smaller character list hurts it. "Marvel vs. Capcom: Clash of Super Heroes" is solid but feels like a stepping stone to the sequel.
The bottom of the list is rough. "The Punisher" is a dull beat-em-up with repetitive levels. "X-Men: Mutant Apocalypse" has stiff controls and cheap enemy placement. "Marvel Super Heroes: War of the Gems" is a clunky platformer that does not capture the comic book energy.
The rest fall somewhere in between. "Spider-Man: The Animated Series" is a decent side-scroller but gets repetitive fast. "X-Men: Gamesmaster's Legacy" is a handheld port that feels dated. "Marvel MaXimum Collection" is worth it for the top three games alone, but you will want to skip the bottom half.
