Video Game Consoles That Failed (And Shouldn't Have)

Video Game Consoles That Failed (And Shouldn't Have)

There is something special about a games console. Big or small, powerful or quirky, they all have a place in gaming history. Some machines, like the Amstrad GX4000, the Tiger R-Zone, or the infamous Ouya, were doomed from the start. They were bad, and they deserved to fail. But not every console that flopped was a piece of junk. In fact, some of the best ideas in gaming came from systems that never got a fair shot. These are the ones that hurt the most.

First up is the Sega Dreamcast. It was ahead of its time with online play and a great library of games like Soulcalibur and Sonic Adventure. But it launched against the hype of the PlayStation 2, and Sega just could not keep up. The Dreamcast died too soon, and it left a hole in Sega's hardware legacy.

Then there is the Nintendo Wii U. The GamePad was a strange idea, but it had real potential for asymmetric multiplayer. Poor marketing and a confusing name killed it before people even understood what it was. The Switch later proved Nintendo had the right ideas all along, just not in the right shell.

The Panasonic 3DO was another one. It was expensive, sure, but it was a technical beast for its time. Full motion video and CD quality sound were huge back then. The price tag scared people off, and the lack of strong first party titles did not help.

We also have the Atari Jaguar. It had a 64 bit processor before anyone else, but the controller was awful and the games were mostly messy. Still, there was a spark of ambition there that most companies lacked.

Finally, the Sega Saturn. It was a nightmare to develop for, but when developers cracked it, games like Nights into Dreams and Panzer Dragoon Saga were pure magic. The rushed launch in the West ruined its chances, but the hardware itself was a marvel.

These consoles failed for many reasons, but not because they were boring or lazy. They took risks. And sometimes, taking a risk means falling flat. But for those of us who played them, they will always hold a special place in our hearts.
