The more things change, the more things stay the same. A new indie title, "Control Resonant," is drawing heavy inspiration from a trio of iconic sources: the stylish combat of "Devil May Cry," the psychological depth of "Neon Genesis Evangelion," and the layered reality of "Inception." The result is a trippy, fast-paced sci-fi action game that aims to stand out in a crowded genre.
Developed by a small team, "Control Resonant" puts players in the role of a reality-bending agent. The combat system is built around fluid, acrobatic moves reminiscent of Dante's swordplay, but with a twist. Players can manipulate gravity and perception, creating "resonance fields" that alter the environment mid-combo. Enemies shift between physical forms and abstract data constructs, forcing players to adapt their strategy on the fly.
The narrative is where the Evangelion influence shines. The story follows a pilot trapped in a cycle of simulated battles, questioning whether the world around them is real or a construct. The protagonist's internal struggle mirrors the psychological trauma of Shinji Ikari, while the visual design borrows the stark, industrial aesthetic of the anime. Meanwhile, the Inception-like mechanics allow players to dive into multiple layers of reality, where each level has its own physics and rules. A single punch in one layer might cause a building to collapse in another.
With its blend of high-octane combat and existential dread, "Control Resonant" is shaping up to be a bold experiment for fans of both action games and surreal storytelling.
