5 Hit SNES Video Games No One Remembers Today

The Super Nintendo library is packed with classics that still get talked about today, from Super Mario World to The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. But for every timeless icon, there are a handful of games that were huge hits in their day and then quietly slipped off the radar. Here are five SNES titles that sold well and earned great reviews, yet most people seem to have completely forgotten.

First up is "Super Adventure Island." This platformer starred Master Higgins from the original Adventure Island series, but it got a full SNES makeover with colorful graphics and tight controls. It was a launch window title and sold briskly, yet it rarely comes up in retro discussions. The same goes for "Plok," a quirky action game from the creators of Zool. Plok had a unique mechanic where the hero could throw his own limbs as weapons. It was praised for its creativity and difficulty, but the character never caught on like Mario or Sonic.

Another forgotten hit is "The Ignition Factor." This is a firefighting simulation game that was surprisingly deep. You had to manage equipment, rescue civilians, and put out complex blazes. It got strong reviews for its originality, but the niche subject matter meant it faded fast. Then there is "Soul Blazer," an action RPG from Quintet. It is often overshadowed by its spiritual successors, Illusion of Gaia and Terranigma, but Soul Blazer was a critical and commercial success in its own right. Its top-down combat and world-rebuilding mechanic were fresh at the time.

Finally, "Maui Mallard in Cold Shadow" deserves a mention. This Disney game starred Donald Duck as a ninja detective. It had a moody atmosphere, tight platforming, and a memorable soundtrack. Despite strong sales and positive word of mouth, it is rarely listed among the best Disney games today. These five titles prove that even a hit can be forgotten when the next big thing comes along.
