Marvel's Spider-Man and its sequel have set a high bar for superhero gaming. While we wait for the third installment, here are five titles that capture the same thrill of swinging through a city, mastering fluid combat, and telling a personal story.
First, Batman: Arkham City remains the gold standard for vigilante gameplay. It invented the free-flow combat system that Spider-Man later perfected. Gliding across Gotham feels as natural as web-swinging, and the detective work adds a layer of mystery.
Second, Infamous Second Son lets you play as a super-powered rebel in a modern Seattle. The neon dash ability gives you a similar sense of speed and verticality, and the moral choices let you shape the story as a hero or a tyrant.
Third, Sunset Overdrive is a chaotic, colorful shooter from the same studio that made Spider-Man. You grind on rails, bounce off cars, and wall-run through a zombie-infested city. The humor is over the top, but the movement is pure joy.
Fourth, Ghost of Tsushima offers a different kind of hero. You play as a samurai defending his homeland. The combat is deliberate and brutal, but the open world exploration, with its wind guiding you, feels as organic as swinging through Manhattan.
Finally, Prototype 2 lets you become a shapeshifting monster in a viral outbreak. You can run up buildings, throw tanks, and consume enemies for health. It is darker and more violent, but the raw power and urban traversal are very similar.
These games offer the same freedom, action, and sense of being a larger-than-life figure. They should keep you busy until Spider-Man 3 arrives.
