Sometimes gaming companies' attempts to peer into the industry's crystal ball were less than successful. Here are five predictions that aged like milk left in a hot console.
1. "The Wii U Will Dominate the Next Generation"
In 2011, Nintendo's president declared the Wii U would redefine home gaming. Instead, the console sold poorly, confused customers with its tablet controller, and was quickly abandoned. The Switch, which came later, proved Nintendo's real winning formula was portable hybrid play, not a gimmicky second screen.
2. "PC Gaming Is Dying"
During the early 2010s, analysts repeatedly claimed PC gaming was on its deathbed due to console dominance and piracy. They could not have been more wrong. PC gaming exploded thanks to Steam, esports, and affordable hardware. Today, it generates more revenue than consoles combined.
3. "Mobile Games Will Kill Traditional Consoles"
When smartphone gaming took off around 2008, pundits predicted the end of dedicated gaming hardware. But mobile gaming created a separate market of casual players. Hardcore gamers stuck with consoles and PCs, and the industry grew larger than ever, with mobile and traditional gaming coexisting.
4. "The Xbox One's Always-Online Requirement Is the Future"
Microsoft's 2013 plan to require constant internet connection for the Xbox One was pitched as a bold step forward. Gamers revolted, calling it anti-consumer and restrictive. Microsoft reversed course before launch, and the always-online model never became standard for home consoles.
5. "Virtual Reality Will Replace All Other Gaming by 2020"
In 2014, VR hype was immense. Some executives predicted it would make traditional screens obsolete within six years. While VR has found a niche in simulation and fitness games, it remains expensive, bulky, and far from mainstream. Most players still prefer a simple monitor or TV.
