The Federal Aviation Administration is on the verge of meeting its annual hiring goal for air traffic controllers, thanks in large part to a recruiting campaign that deliberately sought out a surprising demographic: video gamers. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced this week that the agency has already brought on more than 2,000 new controllers for the fiscal year, reaching 94 percent of its target with weeks still left on the calendar.
The strategy, which involved targeted ads on gaming platforms and partnerships with esports organizations, was designed to tap into skills that translate well to the control tower. Fast reaction times, spatial awareness, and the ability to juggle multiple streams of information under pressure are all traits common among serious gamers, and the FAA leaned into that connection. The campaign also included a dedicated website and a series of online challenges that mimicked air traffic scenarios.
Duffy called the progress a strong sign that the agency is turning a corner after years of staffing shortages and high burnout rates among existing controllers. The FAA still faces a long-term need for thousands more hires over the next decade as veteran controllers retire, but officials say the gamer-focused push has proven more effective than traditional job fairs and college recruiting. The agency is now considering expanding the approach to other hard-to-fill technical roles.
