Agent was another massive title in the Rockstar Games portfolio, until it was abandoned for good in 2018. Recently, co-founder Dan Houser shed light on the reasons behind this decision. According to Houser, the game, which was initially announced in 2009, faced numerous challenges during its development process.
He revealed that the ambitious scope of Agent, set during the Cold War, led to complications that the team struggled to overcome. The innovative gameplay mechanics and narrative depth envisioned for the title required extensive resources and time, which ultimately proved to be a daunting task.
As the gaming landscape evolved, Rockstar realized that the project was not aligning with their current priorities and vision. This realization prompted the team to make the difficult decision to shelve the game rather than release a product that did not meet their high standards. Houser's insights provide a rare glimpse into the complexities of game development and the tough choices that come with it.
