‘Saros’ Blends Cosmic Horror With Tough But Addictive Gameplay [Review]

Returnal remains one of the best games I have ever played that I simply could not finish. It was a thrill to watch Housemarque, a studio I have followed since the days of Super Stardust HD, evolve from crafting arcade-style shooters into delivering a full-budget, AAA third-person experience. The mix of surreal sci-fi storytelling and electrifying gunplay hooked me, but the punishing roguelike structure eventually wore me down. Now, the team is back with Saros, and early impressions suggest it refines that same formula while leaning harder into cosmic dread.

Saros takes the core loop of dying, losing progress, and starting over, but it introduces more persistent upgrades that soften the blow of failure. The horror elements feel more deliberate this time, with grotesque alien designs and an oppressive atmosphere that builds tension between firefights. The combat remains fast and demanding, requiring precise aim and quick reflexes, but the payoff is a satisfying sense of mastery. Each run pushes you to learn enemy patterns and adapt your loadout on the fly.

For players who bounced off Returnal's difficulty, Saros may still feel like a tough sell. But for those who crave a challenge wrapped in a Lovecraftian narrative, this looks like a worthy successor. Housemarque has doubled down on what makes their games distinctive, and the result is a title that feels both punishing and impossible to put down.
