Could lightning shock you while gaming inside your home?

Could lightning shock you while gaming inside your home?

You might think you are safe from lightning once you step inside your home, especially when you are focused on a video game. But experts warn that the risk of a shock, while low, is not zero. The real danger comes from the electrical pathways that lightning can travel through.

When lightning hits a house or the ground nearby, the surge can travel through wiring, plumbing, and metal pipes. If you are gaming, you are likely connected to several of these paths. Your console or PC is plugged into a wall outlet. Your headset might be wired. Your hands are on a controller or keyboard that is also connected to the system. If a nearby strike sends a surge through the home's electrical system, that current can reach your equipment and, in rare cases, pass through you.

The most common injury is not a direct hit but a side flash or a step voltage. A side flash happens when lightning jumps from a conductor, like a wall wire, to a nearby person. Step voltage occurs when the ground itself becomes electrified after a strike, and the current travels up one leg and down the other. This is more likely if you are sitting on a concrete floor in a basement, as concrete often has metal rebar or moisture that conducts electricity.

To stay safe, unplug your gaming gear during a severe thunderstorm. Do not rely on a surge protector alone, as a direct lightning strike can overwhelm it. Also, avoid using corded headsets or controllers. Wireless gear reduces the risk because it breaks the physical connection to the house wiring. If you feel a tingle or hear buzzing from your equipment during a storm, stop playing immediately and move away from all plugged-in devices. The odds are small, but the consequences can be severe.
