2001 was supposed to be the year we made contact with aliens, according to Arthur C. Clarke. Instead, it became the year video games grew up, got darker, and changed how we play forever. Five titles from that year still echo through every console and PC today.
First, "Halo: Combat Evolved" landed on the original Xbox and redefined the first-person shooter on consoles. Its dual-stick controls, regenerating health, and two-weapon limit became the gold standard for every shooter that followed. Without Halo, there is no "Call of Duty" or "Destiny" as we know them.
Then came "Grand Theft Auto III." Rockstar took a top-down crime game and turned it into a sprawling, 3D open world. Players could ignore the story, steal cars, and cause chaos in Liberty City. It proved that nonlinear freedom could sell millions, spawning an entire genre of sandbox games.
"Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty" pushed cinematic storytelling in games to new heights. Hideo Kojima's sequel toyed with player expectations, introduced stealth mechanics that felt revolutionary, and ended with a mind-bending plot about digital control. It made gamers expect movie-quality narratives.
"Devil May Cry" arrived as a stylish, over-the-top action game that demanded precision and flair. Its combo-driven combat and gothic atmosphere created the "character action" genre, directly influencing "God of War" and "Bayonetta."
Finally, "Super Smash Bros. Melee" on the GameCube turned a party brawler into a competitive phenomenon. Its deep mechanics, fast pacing, and technical skill ceiling built a fighting game community that still thrives at tournaments today.
These five games didn't just sell well. They rewrote the rules, and we are still playing by them.
