Sony PlayStation kills physical disc games forever

Sony PlayStation has announced it will cease production of physical video game discs in January 2028, a move that effectively kills the era of physical game ownership for the company's platform. The decision means the next-generation PlayStation 6 is expected to be a digital-only console, leaving gamers unable to buy, sell, or trade physical copies of their games.

Kahlief Adams, CEO of Spawn on Me LLC, joined FOX 35's Garrett Wymer via Zoom to discuss the announcement. Adams pointed out that this shift marks a major turning point for the gaming industry, where consumers will no longer have the option to physically own the software they purchase. "This is the final form of planned obsolescence," Adams said during the interview. "When you buy a digital game, you are really just buying a license. You don't own anything you can hold or resell."

The discussion also touched on the broader state of the gaming industry. With major publishers pushing toward all-digital ecosystems, questions about consumer rights, game preservation, and long-term access are becoming more urgent. Critics argue that without physical media, companies can revoke access to games at any time, leaving libraries of purchased titles vulnerable.

Sony's timeline gives the industry and consumers roughly four years to adjust, but for many collectors and physical media enthusiasts, the announcement feels like a final nail in the coffin for a format that has defined home gaming for decades.
