'REPLACED' Review: A Visual Masterpiece Undermined by Lackluster Gameplay

The indie gaming scene has long celebrated titles that wear their retro inspirations on their sleeves, and 'REPLACED' is no exception—at least from a visual standpoint. Rendered in a glorious 16-bit retro style, the game is a joy to look at, with pixel-perfect animations, vibrant color palettes, and meticulously crafted environments that evoke the golden age of side-scrolling action games. Every frame feels like a love letter to the 1990s, from the neon-drenched cityscapes to the fluid character sprites that move with surprising grace. The art direction alone is enough to draw players in, promising a nostalgic journey through a dystopian world.

Unfortunately, that promise quickly falters when the controller is in hand. 'REPLACED' suffers from stilted combat mechanics that hold it back from true greatness. The core gameplay loop—a mix of platforming and brawler-style fights—feels clunky and unresponsive. Attacks lack impact, enemy AI is predictable, and the timing for dodges and blocks is inconsistent, leading to frustrating encounters that feel more like chores than challenges. The platforming sections fare slightly better, but even they are marred by slippery controls and poorly placed checkpoints.

What could have been a standout title in the retro revival genre instead becomes a frustrating experience where the visuals constantly remind players of what might have been. The story, which touches on themes of identity and technological decay, is intriguing but poorly paced, often interrupted by tedious gameplay segments. For those who prioritize aesthetics over mechanics, 'REPLACED' offers a feast for the eyes. But for anyone seeking a satisfying gameplay experience, it is a hollow shell—a beautiful painting that you cannot truly interact with.
