Sony has confirmed it will stop producing physical game discs for the PlayStation platform starting in January 2028. After that date, all new titles will be released as download-only purchases. The decision marks a major turning point for the console industry and for the millions of gamers who still buy boxed copies.
The move effectively ends the ability to trade in used games or lend a disc to a friend. Without a physical copy, there is no secondhand market, no sharing between households, and no way to play a title without an active account tied to the PlayStation Network. It also raises the upfront cost of entry to the console market. Gamers who rely on buying pre-owned discs to afford new releases will lose that option entirely.
Beyond convenience, the shift changes what it means to own a game. Under the new model, every purchase is a license, not a product. Sony retains the ability to revoke access to a title, remove it from a user's library, or shut down servers that verify ownership. Physical discs, for all their fragility, gave buyers a tangible object that could not be taken back.
The industry has been moving toward digital sales for years, but this is the first time a major console maker has set a hard deadline to eliminate physical media entirely. For collectors, preservationists, and anyone who values ownership over access, the announcement signals the end of an era.
