I'll Be Honest, I'm Dreading the Launch of GTA 6

The release date for Grand Theft Auto VI is set for November 19, and I will be honest: I am dreading it. Not the game itself, which will likely be a technical marvel and a massive commercial success. What I dread is the conversation around it. The moment the clock hits zero on launch day, the internet will turn into a battlefield. Critics will post their scores, culture-war soldiers will pick apart every character and joke, and trolls will flood every comment section with the same tired arguments. It is exhausting just thinking about it.

For those of us who review games for a living, this is the worst part of the job. A game this big does not just get reviewed. It gets dissected, weaponized, and reduced to a political talking point. Every frame, every line of dialogue, every side mission will be scanned for something to be angry about. People who have not even played the game will argue about it as if they spent a hundred hours in it. The actual quality of the game, the fun of it, the craft of it, will get buried under a mountain of hot takes.

I wish we could just play the game and talk about what it does well and what it does poorly. But that is not how the internet works anymore. The noise starts before the game is even installed. So yes, I am dreading the launch. I will play it, I will review it, and I will do my best to be fair. But I already know that the real story will not be the game itself. It will be the chaos around it. And that is a shame.
