Over ten years after first stepping into the boots of the charismatic pirate-assassin, actor Matt Ryan has opened up about what it felt like to return to the role of Edward Kenway for the newly released "Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced." The remastered edition of the 2013 classic brings back the swashbuckling adventure with enhanced visuals and performance tweaks, but for Ryan, the real journey was emotional.
In a recent interview, Ryan admitted that revisiting Edward was like meeting an old friend. He recalled the original recording sessions, describing them as a whirlwind of energy and improvisation. "Edward was a character who lived in the moment, and that's how we played him," Ryan said. "Coming back, I had to find that same reckless charm, but with a decade of life experience under my belt." He noted that while the character's core remained the same, his own understanding of Kenway's motivations -- a man torn between greed, freedom, and family -- had deepened.
Ryan also touched on the fan response, which has kept the character alive long after the original game's release. "People still cosplay him, quote his lines, and ask for more stories," he said. "That kind of passion is rare, and it made stepping back into the animus feel natural." For those wondering if this return hints at future appearances, Ryan stayed coy, simply stating that he was grateful to have been part of a story that still resonates. "Edward's journey was always about finding his own path," he added. "And maybe that's why players still want to sail with him."
