Grand Theft Auto 6 is shaping up to be the biggest game of 2026, and many already consider it the default pick for Game of the Year. But Rockstar's next blockbuster is not the only heavyweight on the horizon. A handful of ambitious titles could steal the spotlight if they deliver on their promises.
First up is the next entry in the Elder Scrolls series. Bethesda has been quiet, but a 2026 release would put it head-to-head with GTA 6. A massive open world with deep lore and player freedom is a proven formula for awards.
Then there is the new Fable from Playground Games. The reboot looks charming, with a focus on humor and British fantasy. If it nails the tone and gameplay, it could be a dark horse.
Another strong contender is the next mainline Final Fantasy. Square Enix has been on a roll, and a new single-player entry with stunning visuals and a gripping story could sway voters.
Do not count out the next Zelda. Nintendo is rumored to have a new 3D Zelda in the works for 2026. If it follows Breath of the Wild's legacy, it will be a serious threat.
Other games to watch include a potential new God of War, a follow-up to Elden Ring from FromSoftware, and the next installment in the Call of Duty series if it takes a bold new direction. Indie titles like Hollow Knight Silksong or Hades 2 could also surprise everyone.
In the end, GTA 6 has the name recognition and budget to dominate. But a single misstep in its launch or a masterpiece from any of these rivals could flip the race wide open.
